Celebrate the Resurrection Every Day!
And if Christ has not been raised, then all our preaching is useless, and your faith is useless. And we apostles would all be lying about God—for we have said that God raised Christ from the grave. But that can’t be true if there is no resurrection of the dead. And if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, then your faith is useless and you are still guilty of your sins. In that case, all who have died believing in Christ are lost! And if our hope in Christ is only for this life, we are more to be pitied than anyone in the world. 1 Cor 15:14-19
Why A Recording Studio?
by Jim McCandliss & M. Bagby
In the next few months, a team from Maui will travel to Waspam Nicaragua and complete one of the final phases of the Waspam Discipleship Center: The Recording Studio.
When we envisioned this building in 2003, we wanted to include activities that would promote Miskito culture, which has been under assault by the modern world. With the Latino culture first, and now television and the internet, many of the unique qualities of the Miskito culture are vanishing. Music has always been an integral part of the way if life on the Rio Coco. The early missionaries used the communication quality of music to communicate many elements of the Gospel. We designed the building and designated an interior room on the second floor as “Recording Studio”. It was a typical faith move on our part, yet God has been faithful to supply all the equipment, and now He has supplied us with Jim McCandliss, one of the finest sound engineers in
Hawaii, to come and install the sound insulation, set up the sound board, and connect all the recorders and microphones.
We met with Jim and his wife Cheryl, who is a leader in the women’s ministry at Hope Chapel in Kihei. These two have been involved in a ministry in Cambodia during these past years, so they know what working in the Third and Fourth World is like.
Over lunch at Zippy’s with the MCCandliss’ and team leaders Sonie and Will Riedel, we excitedly discussed the steps required to get the studio operating. I asked Jim to write down a few thoughts for you all on this project, so that you too can sense the magnitude of what God is about to accomplish.
Thinking about the possibilities that could materialize in the lives of the Rio Coco people through a simple recording studio brings is exciting and humbling. I'm glad to have a small part in this undertaking.
I've been thinking a lot about the studio, trying to imagine how this technology might affect life in a simple and unsophisticated corner of the world. Could this technology (this studio) influence the lives around the Rio Coco like the printing press impacted the world? Maybe it's a stretch…but could these recordings be the vehicle that tells their story.
From what I've read, the indigenous Miskito Indians have cultural roots going back to the 1600's and have remained isolated from the mainstream population of the Americas. I can only imagine that their culture of music and song is unknown to the modern world and that without some means to record it, would someday become extinct to the current Miskito generation. Wouldn't it be cool to archive their music for posterity?
Here are some other benefits that I imagine could come from the studio…
1. Creating a means to teach via a recorded curriculum. Master teachers could prepare lessons for students in other schools…thereby increasing their ability to teach more students in remote areas. This could be effective for subjects that are especially aural in their presentation.
2. Create programming material for the local radio stations. Specialist in areas of interest to the river community (such as farming, personal health, family relationships, local events, etc…think "talk radio for the Rio Coco") could be interviewed in a talk-show format and then broadcast,
3. Bible teaching lessons taught by local pastors.
4. Recording Miskito music for radio airplay, distribution, and a cultural archive.
5. Training locals in the technical skills associated with recording, computers, and music technology.
6. Providing gifted musicians and singer an outlet for getting their music heard.
7. Providing worship music for the Christian community…and for outreach via the radio.
8. Provide an income stream to the ministry by selling recording services to local businesses.
Technically we'll be creating a controlled environment with proper acoustics that isolates the recording rooms from outside noise sources. We are looking for the right insulation material to line the walls with. That may be difficult, but we know that God knows what we need. Since the recording equipment is sensitive to heat and excessive humidity, the studio and control room will require an air conditioning system to keep the equipment operational. This is mandatory for the climate of the Rio Coco. As with all our projects in foreign places, we do ask for your prayers now for the preparation and while we are there. This is going to be a huge boost for Seek The Lamb’s ministry in Nicaragua. JM
Jim is correct! When we attempted to set up our studio in 2008, we suddenly realized the need for a quiet, dust free, cool place where our team could work. You can see from this photo taken in the summer of 2008 that we do have an enthusiastic team of leaders who understand the value of radio broadcasts, and how this media can be used in our community development and discipleship efforts.
Please Pray for all the resources needed to finish this job! See the “Arrows” insert for specifics. MB
Faithful Is As Faithful Does!
Here is a significant Biblical Principle:
Just when you think your career is over, many times it is actually just beginning.
This was the story of the famous radio Bible teacher, my friend Dr. J.Vernon McGee, who after retiring from pastoring at age 65 was invited to speak on a local Christian radio station in Pasadena California. The occasional appearance turned in to a every day of the year “Through The Bible Radio” program that eventually got translated into over 100 languages, and years after J. Vernon’s death, is still heard on every continent every day.
The same can be said of our dear friend Ted Lebrecht. Ted is a “retired” accountant who began working with his electrician friend Ray Bodie in Lake Gage Indiana as his accounting career was ending. When Ray came to Nicaragua in 2007, he brought Ted, and Ted has been coming back every year since. Ted has spent some of the hottest hours of the day wiring all the rooms in the Waspam Discipleship Center. When you walk though this amazing building, you will see Ted’s handiwork in every corner! His switches, sockets, and light fixtures will make life easier for us for the next two, three, and four decades. He has also traveled with us to Utila, where Ted was part of the building team for our coffee business last August.
Ted and His wife Anne have become dear friends and ministry partners with all of us over these past years. We especially enjoyed spending time with him and Anne at their home on Lake Gage this past fall.
Ted discovered a few weeks ago that he is battling a life terminating illness. If he doesn’t receive a touch from the Lord soon, he may depart before all of us. We are deeply saddened by this news, and are praying for Ted and Anne, and their children.
Please join us in lifting up our dear brother to the Lord. Please ask God to allow Ted to at least spend a few more years with us so that we can all enjoy the finished work in Waspam together.
We have really enjoyed these years of having Ted serve so faithfully on the Seek The Lamb team. MB
Lamb Bleatings By Laura Bagby
Moselle and I were both sitting in the office and she was working on a story she was writing. I was also writing and concentrating. She kept wanting to read me her story sentence by sentence and this was exceedingly distracting to my train of thought, but her enthusiasm was hard to deny. I turned to her and she read her first sentence,
“Today was like any other normal day!”
Moselle alone would have an exclamation point after that kind of sentence . As someone that lives with her, I could understand why she would use that particular punctuation. In this story, she was a fictional Spanish character so I told her to take the exclamation out of her sentence and use a period.
Most of her personal moments are lived with great exclamation in virtually every area of her life. She lives hard and mostly enthusiastically...a real joy to be with, work with and play with.
However at 10, there are a few attitudes that are beginning to creep in that she has tried out, but we are quick to the chase. She is the fourth and we have grown wise in the ways of non submissive behaviors and the sin that lurks to bite every one of us.
We all battle evil daily. I hate it, but it is there and a force to be reckoned with if we live in awareness and advancement of eternal affairs. Each one of us must win our own battles and come to places of deeper greater dependence on the One who has charge over our lives. To lay ourselves and our wills down is often a painful experience, but necessary in the battle.
One of our friends passed away a couple of nights ago. There is much grief in the air and lots of prayers are being lifted in our household. Mikaela wrote a quote on Facebook that read: “We all die. The goal isn’t to live forever, the goal is to create something that will.”
The memorial is on Friday evening and Arielle and I were discussing how full the service will be because of all the people that loved and respected Bart Simmons.
He was a strong faithful man full of perseverance and good deeds. He was a great witness for the King and strong influencer of people. He was a beautiful light with a beautiful faithful young wife that will be left to carry on God’s will. He will suffer no more. The rest of us here will feel the pain and the loss of his departure, but we will continually remember his impressive exclamation he made upon us through his life and God himself will be glorified even in his death.
How are we at “exclaiming” eternity through our lives? Arielle said pensively, “I wonder if I am going to have a lot of people at my funeral?” I told her, “I think you will have a lot of people there to honor your life if you continue to live it well and generously. You are such a blessing and you don’t just think about yourself. You have the ability to live outside of your own little world and that is what makes you so mature and influential. Yep, there will be a lot of people at your funeral Arielle.”
It is good to think about how we desire to end this time here on earth. Death teaches us about life. Life is full of opportunities to exclaim God’s character through us. Selfless….loving…..giving...caring.
I purchased a silver ring that looked like an exclamation point for Mikaela from Nicaragua . When I saw it, I thought of how Mik makes it a point to bless others as she sees people or makes time to talk to them...especially “forgotten ones” . In doing so, she exclaims who Jesus is and His life is given out. I watch her bless others and extend herself out. She bears the burdens of many and I am quite pleased at her manner of living it out exclaiming the life of Jesus through her choices. It is good. She is gaining what I call, “spiritual grit”….the abililty to live beyond her own desires, comforts and conveniences, and to do the right thing for the right reason even when you just don’t feel like it. One does not exclaim for eternity by simply talking and sitting around trying to understand it all….no, the Kingdom of God is not made up of only words but of power, action, and the freedom to choose. Then, we live it out accordingly with a sound mind, sincere faith, and lots of under girding love.
This morning Lukas and Moselle were walking out together. Luk decided to take his sister to Pet Co. They talked about it previously, but to see it happening brought a lot of delight to all . Moselle was so proud to be with her brother. It will be a precious memory. Love in action. Acts of the will that take time. These seemingly little choices of life make up our memory banks of what exclaims the loudest. God will exclaim Himself through us as much as we allow Him to. Trust and willingness exercised boldly daily.
There is no perfection in this world, in circumstances or in us. We are all made of dust. In all and through all, God is there and cares. Victory belongs to the Lord & only in Him do we find LIFE.
“Death leaves a heartache no one can heal and love leaves a memory no one could ever take way.”
Walking LIFE out with Him and You. Laura
The pioneer rocker Jerry Lee Lewis said it best in his hit song “A Whole Lotta of Shakin’ Going On”. The times are accelerating, and people are being tested. This is a time for “inciting incidents” that have shaken the useless and unnecessary things off our trees. Indeed, Jesus did tell us that if we were bearing fruit in our lives that God would have seasons of pruning us that that we would indeed produce more fruit (John 15). A whole lotta shakin’ is going on! We feel it in our relationships, in our economy, in our ministry, and in the physical and political world around us. But be encouraged! It is we who receive what God is sending for our own good that will come through stronger and more focused on the essentials of God’s plans for our lives.
I pass that on as a reminder.
We saw many of you this past month in Hawaii. Laura was there for over 5 weeks helping her Mom recover from an illness, and she was very successful in her ministry to her family. She also had the time to reconnect with many of her dear friends from high school and Christian ministry past times. It was sweet! I tried to surprise her after some of my friends supplied me with a ticket to Maui, but we were unsuccessful. Still, it was nice after to three weeks away from my lover to see her again. We met on Maui on Thursday night and the tsunami hit a few hours later! Go figure! And in the next 11 days, we were very well used by our church on Maui, Hope Chapel, to teach at the Friday night and Sunday morning services, speak to the church staff, the interns, our Couples’ Ohana group, and Craig’s discipleship group. We also had a chance to visit our friends and ministry partners at Waipuna Chapel and Kumulani Chapel! Plus we had many special moments with our longtime friends. It is always nice to be around folks who love and care for you! Thanks to you all for giving us such aloha and caring for us in the way you did!
In these next months, we will be traveling to Honduras and Nicaragua to continue the ministry along the Rio Coco and on the island of Utila. We are organizing teams for this summer. Please stay tuned for details! We need to hear from the Lord on many many details. Laura & Michael
