You may remember reading a few months ago in the Conchshell Chronicles about Tracy and Terry Borcheller’s trip to the Rio Coco in July. Terry wrote an inspirational article about his meeting with his two sponsored children through the Make A Disciple program.
Terry does other things beside missionary work. He pastors a men’s group in Vero Beach Florida on Tuesday morning, and is famous as a championship Grand Prix racer.
Terry started the 2009 Rolex Cup Grand Am season driving for the Brumos Team, where he took third place in the Daytona 24 hours race, driving the Brumos Porsche “59” car. This was an incredible day for the Brumos team as their other entry took first place. Due to the effect of our economy on the racing season, Terry chances for further driving were severely curtailed, as teams canceled cars and drivers.
A few weeks ago, Terry was asked to drive the final race, the Miami Grand Prix, for another team, in the number “22” car. It was a good opportunity for Terry, an he accepted.
This past week, the driver of the Brumos “59” car was suspended for DUI, and drug possession. Unbeknownst to us, on Wednesday, the Brumos team called Terry to see is he would drive the “59” in the Maimi race. Terry was severly conflicted, have team loyality to the Brumos team, but having committed to the “22” car, he declined. Terry is a man of integrity.
We watched the race and were so excited to see Terry driving. He drove well for the first hour, staying in the top eight. There were numerous accidents, and the 250 mile race ended under a yellow flag, with a surprise finish: The Brumos “59” car gained the lead, and once the yellow flag appeared to clean the track debris, stayed there until the finish. As we watched the Brumos Team celebrate, I could only think that somehow Terry belonged in that picture.
We called Terry a few hours after the race, and he was really second guessing himself about his decision to stay with his commitment to the “22” car, and miss out on finishing the season with a win.
Then he told us about the rest of the weekend……
Terry did the chapel service for the drivers and crews before the race. He often is invited to speak at these gatherings. He had invited about 14 of his friends who had never attended a chapel, and to his amazement, they were all there, including his special friend, actor Patrick Dempsey, the owner/driver of the “40” GT car. Patrick is searching right now, and he and Terry have had significant conversations all season. Terry gave in his words his best message ever– talking about the difference between the “religious” Jesus and the “historical” Jesus. There was a great response to this discussion of the reality of Jesus as our Lord.
All this a few hours before the race began.
Terry also races in another series, the Mustang GT racing. His co-driver is a young man named Andrew who Terry befriended and invited him to visit Vero Beach, where he became friends with many of us. It was there that Andrew also came to our church, and there began a personal relationship with Jesus. Over this past year, Terry has spent many days traveling and racing with Andrew, as well as at our Men’s Group in Vero Beach on Tuesday. He has encouraged, taught, admonished, supported, and loved on Andrew. Terry has a pastor’s heart, and it is very evident in his relationship with not only Andrew, but with John, Jeff, Nick, and the other men in our group.
This weekend, both Nick and Andrew attended the Men’s Encounter in Vero Beach Florida, which is a weekend retreat where many draw much closer to the Lord.
Tonight, Terry had the pleasure to see Andrew get baptized! We are all celebrating!
Terry had a championship weekend, doing the Lord’s business. He may have missed an opportunity to stand on the Miami Grand Prix winner’s podium, but his certainly took the Gold Medal for the King in his efforts off the track. Well done Terry! We are all very proud of you!
