In 1979, a Marixt government took power in Nicaragua. They called themselves the Sandinistas. With much popular support, they ousted a long-time repressive dictator named Somoza. However when they took over, they immediately began confiscating private property, and began to bring in Russian and other Soviet bloc soldiers. Cubans arrived to take over the school system, and anyone resisting was imprisioned and/or killed. The Miskito Indians on the Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua were forced to give up control of their land, schools, farms, vehicles, boat motors, and political rights. Many resisted, and the Sandinistas came down on them with a heavy hand.
